Screening for Skin Cancer: Prevention and Awareness
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in North America. The incidence of malignant melanoma of the skin, the most serious form of skin cancer, is increasing faster than any other potentially preventable cancer.
Melanoma should be amendable to screening because of its unique external visibility and well documented risk factors.
Keeping a close eye on your skin and being sun smart will help your skin staying healthy.
If you noticed that your mole is changing or there is a change in the skin see your primary doctor or dermatologist.
We recommend that everyone should have clinical skin exam. People who’s risk is high or very high should have full body skin exam annually.
This simple visual exam in the office, regular self exams and one’s awareness of any changes in your skin are powerful tools to skin health and skin cancer prevention.
High Risk of Skin Cancer
Individuals with two or more factors are at a high risk for skin cancer (roughly 5 times the risk of the general population):
- a first-degree relative with melanoma
- many (50-100) nevi
- one or more atypical (dysplastic) nevi
- naturally red or blond hair
- a tendency to freckle
- skin that burns easily and tans poorly or not at all
