Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails and fingernails that results in thickening, discoloration, and splitting of the nails, as well as lifting of the nails from the nail bed. It is caused by different species including Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Candida sp., and Aspergilus niger.

There are few treatment options available including topical and oral medication but none of these treatments provide lasting cure.

Due to the light absorbing substance present in fungus, Fotona Nd:YAG laser irradiation results in excessive heat production which leads to the destruction of the fungus and therefore to the termination of the infection.
